Greetings from STILL WATERS FARM AND GARDENS!

Summertime is here and the heat is on. Warm days have become hot days. The flowers are growing well despite a lack of rain over the past few weeks. The days seem long as we start harvesting when the sun rises in order to beat the heat and then do many of our outside chores later in the evening after the sun is setting behind the trees. With little rain, watering has been another item added to our chore list during these hot summer days. We hope you enjoy this edition of our Newsletter with updates from our farm and the latest seasonal offerings.

Summer Garden Update

Our Summer Garden is now becoming the center of action on the farm. As mentioned before, we plant a variety of summer flowers and vegetables in this garden that sits on a gentle sloping area behind our barn. The flowers – Ageratum, Amaranth, Basil, Borage, Celosia, Cress, Cosmos, Gomphrena, Sunflowers and Zinnias – fill the rows with a beautiful array of cheerful colors. These heat loving plants enjoy the bountiful sunshine that showers them for most of the day. Alongside the flowers, our vegetables are doing well. Squash, Zucchini and Cucumbers were the first to produce. Now the Okra, Green Beans, Eggplant and Peppers are producing their first fruits. The Tomatoes look good too and it should not be too long before we can enjoy these red gems of summer.

Hedge Rows

One of the aspects of being a Flower Farm in the foothills of North Carolina are the occasional high winds. While we do net (hortonova netting) most of our flowers, the netting alone may not be enough as our fields are mostly exposed with little buffer to slow the wind. To help this situation, we planted our first hedge row of bushes and trees. They look quite small now, but these varieties should grow quickly to give us a nice wind break for our Dahlia and Hardy Annual beds.

Lisianthus - Focal Flower for July

Our Lisianthus are now blooming. This year, we planted a few varieties of colors (Rose, Champagne and White) in one of our tunnels for the first time. Other than an occasional rabbit running through the bed and knocking over a stem, the Lisianthus are enjoying the covered protection of the tunnel. Lisianthus have a rose-like appearance with ruffled petals. Most stems will have more than 1 bloom and they make a beautiful focal flower in an arrangement or bouquet.
